Stephen Joshua Sondheim (/ ˈ s ɒ n d. h aɪ m /; born March 22, 1930) is an American composer and lyricist known for more than a half-century of contributions to.
New York City, New York, U. S. Genres. Musical theatre.
Occupation(s)Years active. Stephen Joshua Sondheim (; born March 2. American composer and lyricist known for more than a half- century of contributions to musical theatre. Sondheim has received an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards (more than any other composer,[1] including a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a 2. Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has been described by Frank Rich of The New York Times as "now the greatest and perhaps best- known artist in the American musical theater."[2] His best- known works as composer and lyricist include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Assassins, and Passion.
He also wrote the lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy. Sondheim has also written film music, contributing "Goodbye for Now" to Warren Beatty's 1. Reds. He wrote five songs for 1. Dick Tracy, including "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)" by Madonna, which won the Academy Award for Best Song.
The composer was president of the Dramatists Guild from 1. To celebrate his 8. Henry Miller's Theatre was renamed the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on September 1.
BBC Proms held a concert in his honor. Cameron Mackintosh has called Sondheim "possibly the greatest lyricist ever."[3]Early years[edit]Sondheim was born into a Jewish family in New York City, the son of Etta Janet ("Foxy," née Fox; 1. Herbert Sondheim (1. His father manufactured dresses designed by his mother. The composer grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and, after his parents divorced, on a farm near Doylestown, Pennsylvania. As the only child of well- to- do parents living in the San Remo on Central Park West, he was described in Meryle Secrest's biography (Stephen Sondheim: A Life) as an isolated, emotionally- neglected child. When he lived in New York, Sondheim attended ECFS, the Ethical Culture Fieldston School known simply as "Fieldston".
He later attended the New York Military Academy and George School, a private Quaker preparatory school in Bucks County, Pennsylvania where he wrote his first musical, By George, and from which he graduated in 1. Sondheim spent several summers at Camp Androscoggin.[4]He traces his interest in theatre to Very Warm for May, a Broadway musical he saw when he was nine. The curtain went up and revealed a piano," Sondheim recalled.
A butler took a duster and brushed it up, tinkling the keys. I thought that was thrilling."[5]When Sondheim was ten, his father (already a distant figure) left his mother for another woman (Alicia, with whom he had two sons).
Herbert sought custody of Stephen but was unsuccessful. Sondheim explained to biographer Secrest that he was "what they call an institutionalized child, meaning one who has no contact with any kind of family. You're in, though it's luxurious, you're in an environment that supplies you with everything but human contact. No brothers and sisters, no parents, and yet plenty to eat, and friends to play with and a warm bed, you know?"Sondheim detested his mother,[6] who was said to be psychologically abusive[7] and projected her anger from her failed marriage on her son: [8] "When my father left her, she substituted me for him.
And she used me the way she used him, to come on to and to berate, beat up on, you see. What she did for five years was treat me like dirt, but come on to me at the same time."[9] She once wrote him a letter saying that the "only regret [she] ever had was giving him birth."[1. When his mother died in the spring of 1. Sondheim did not attend her funeral.[6][1. Mentorship by Oscar Hammerstein II[edit]When Sondheim was about ten years old (around the time of his parents' divorce), he became friends with James Hammerstein, son of lyricist and playwright Oscar Hammerstein II. The elder Hammerstein became Sondheim's surrogate father, influencing him profoundly and developing his love of musical theatre. Sondheim met Hal Prince, who would direct many of his shows, at the opening of South Pacific, Hammerstein's musical with Richard Rodgers.
The comic musical he wrote at George School, By George, was a success among his peers and buoyed the young songwriter's self- esteem. When Sondheim asked Hammerstein to evaluate it as though he had no knowledge of its author, he said it was the worst thing he had ever seen: "But if you want to know why it's terrible, I'll tell you." They spent the rest of the day going over the musical, and Sondheim later said, "In that afternoon I learned more about songwriting and the musical theater than most people learn in a lifetime."[1. Hammerstein designed a course of sorts for Sondheim on constructing a musical. He had the young composer write four musicals, each with one of the following conditions: Based on a play he admired (which became All That Glitters)Based on a play he liked but thought flawed; Sondheim chose Maxwell Anderson's High Tor. Based on an existing novel or short story not previously dramatized, which became his unfinished version of Mary Poppins (Bad Tuesday,[1.
Sherman Brothers)An original, which became Climb High. None of the "assignment" musicals was produced professionally. Showtime Full Dreamscape Online Free. High Tor and Mary Poppins have never been produced: The rights holder for the original High Tor refused permission, and Mary Poppins was unfinished.[1. College and early career[edit]Sondheim began attending Williams College, a liberal arts college in Williamstown, Massachusetts whose theatre program attracted him. His first teacher there was Robert Barrow: ..
I thought he was wonderful because he was very dry. And Barrow made me realize that all my romantic views of art were nonsense. I had always thought an angel came down and sat on your shoulder and whispered in your ear 'dah- dah- dah- DUM.' Never occurred to me that art was something worked out. And suddenly it was skies opening up. As soon as you find out what a leading tone is, you think, Oh my God.
What a diatonic scale is – Oh my God! The logic of it. And, of course, what that meant to me was: Well, I can do that. Because you just don't know.
You think it's a talent, you think you're born with this thing. What I've found out and what I believed is that everybody is talented. It's just that some people get it developed and some don't.[1. The composer told Meryle Secrest, "I just wanted to study composition, theory, and harmony without the attendant musicology that comes in graduate school.
But I knew I wanted to write for the theatre, so I wanted someone who did not disdain theatre music."[1. Barrow suggested that Sondheim study with Milton Babbitt, who Sondheim described as "a frustrated show composer" with whom he formed "a perfect combination."[1. When he met Babbitt, he was working on a musical for Mary Martin based on the myth of Helen of Troy. Sondheim and Babbitt would meet once a week in New York City for four hours (at the time, Babbitt was teaching at Princeton University). According to Sondheim, they spent the first hour dissecting Rodgers and Hart or George Gershwin or studying Babbitt's favorites (Buddy De. Sylva, Lew Brown and Ray Henderson). They then proceeded to other forms of music (such as Mozart's Jupiter Symphony), critiquing them the same way.[1.
Babbitt and Sondheim, fascinated by mathematics, studied songs by a variety of composers (especially Jerome Kern). Sondheim told Secrest that Kern had the ability "to develop a single motif through tiny variations into a long and never boring line and his maximum development of the minimum of material".
He said about Babbitt, "I am his maverick, his one student who went into the popular arts with all his serious artillery".[1.
Oppo UDP- 2. 03 Ultra HD Blu- ray player - DVD/Blu- ray. O. P. CEDIA was the place for Oppo to announce their Ultra High Definition bluray player the UDP- 2. Being release in the UK before Christmas this year for approx 6. That means a price here of about $1,5. New chip from Mediatek means that the Oppo has been designed from the ground up for UHD.
Retail, which means around $7. No Chance, I'd be surprised if you could get a 1. Looks like we won't see them until next year now. That what I've heard through the grapevine. Crossing my finger for this year though.
I called my av store and they had 2. Dec. Could secure one with a deposit and they wanted $9. My Cousin Rachel Movie Watch Online on this page. My AV store gave me the same date. I preordered on Sunday. Will it play SACDs or any other fancy formats?
Definitely no chance on a "street" price. I reckon 9. 49 isn't too bad considering the price of the 1. My $9. 49 price included next day courier delivery so not bad at all for a day 1 release.
Khan writes.. Will it play SACDs or any other fancy formats. You can throw the kitchen sink at this OPPO and it will play it.. You guys think you've got it rough with an "Aussie tax". The "kiwi gouge" is even worse. Although at $1. 04. NZD) on this side of the ditch, that's actually not too bad a mark- up compared with Aus. Will be importing, just as I have with my previous players – my oldest being from 2.
Even with the bad exchange rates, there's still money to be saved here. How does this player compare to the Panasonic? How does this player compare to the Panasonic? No idea but I will definitely check out the Oppo at my local AV store when it comes in. Having said that, the Panasonic to me, has delivered the 4. K goods in all aspects. I am more than happy with the PQ and AQ as well as its ability to upscale 1.
It has a full remote and its construction is solid enough. I have yet to find any issues with it at all. I predominantly use it for 4. K and 1. 08. 0p BR discs. I pre- ordered one a few weeks ago, and just got a shipping notification and tracking number. Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow! Adam. VF4. 5 writes..
Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. Congrats.. you will have no worries with an Oppo. Mine arrived today, just got it home and am part way through setting up as I type this : DI think I saw on Facebook, that Len Wallis have them and are demoing them tonight. There are a few 2.
Melbourne too.. if you're close to the city, Carlton Audio Visual have one hooked up. And it already wants to download a firmware update : DThe update was SUUUUPER quick though (though 1. Or are we looking at a upgrade chip like their previous models. Or are we looking at a upgrade chip like their previous models. This. Frogger. Squared writes.. What was the final total when shipping was included? Anyone have any first hand observations on UHD to a 4. K TV without HDR? I have a Panasonic 4.
K screen but without HDR. Wanting to make the jump to UHD but without HDR unsure if worth jumping into the Oppo now or waiting. Many people, of which I am one, didn't buy our (first) Oppo player(s) as an "Australian Oppo player."As an owner of a 9. I don't think I could purchase any other player. Have the bugs been ironed out or is there still some work to do? Best price I've seen thus far is $8.
I get any better? Well that's what happens went back to Apollo to purchase and it's back to $9. Cheers. DKcoola. 32 writes.. As an owner of a 9. I don't think I could purchase any other player. Have the bugs been ironed out or is there still some work to do? Which bugs are you talking about?
The '9. 3 is the last Oppo without Cinavia. Frogger. Squared writes.. Which bugs are you talking about?
The '9. 3 is the last Oppo without Cinavia. Okay that didn't appear to go well, I was referring to the 2. Possibly it's a setting issue, I don't know as I don't have one.
I was trying to say now I have an Oppo I would like another, there is nothing wrong with my Oppo 9. Cheers. DKcoola. 32 writes.. Best price I've seen thus far is $8. Where is this? And is it overseas or local?
Have the bugs been ironed ou. Not quite yet, I'm still having freezing issues, but I think it's a software issue because I even had a freeze in navigating menus (mainly for a USB drive). If it's not software, they've screwed up SUPER hard, and have failed to put in enough processing power, which means software won't fix it, but at that point I'd say they'd be bordering on needing to do a recall..
But that's a special kind of unlikely, the only people who would do that is Foxtel's hardware team : P it HAS to be a software issue. Are all the bugs fixed yet? Come on people, the player hasn't even been out for two weeks! I had freezing on the first few discs I watched, but then switched to Source Direct and everything else on Auto (on my 9.
I always leave everything set to a specific value), and I haven't seen any issues since then, and I'm really enjoying the speed and picture. The player is telling me it's outputting 4k, 4: 2: 2 at 1. A lot of people have been suggesting that cables are the issue, but people contacting Oppo have been getting a beta firmware that fixes the fault (created in the last days before Christmas, so Oppo are definitely on the case), which means it's clearly a software bug. I expect the fix will be released as an official firmware version in a few weeks. It's amazing these days! We pay top dollar for our electronics, yet we still become beta testers for the manufacturers!

To be fair, UHD- Blu- ray IS a very complicated thing: 8- bits/1. HDR1. 0 (with 1,0. Dolby Vision, H2. DCI- P3, Rec. 20. The change from Blu- ray to UHD Blu- ray is far bigger than many folks realise. Absolutely the owners of the 2. Absolutely their will be bugs. I expect in about 6 months to a year all the quirks should be gone (heck most of the big ones should be gone within a short while). I am hanging on to my BDP- 9. Can this player able to play different region blu- ray and dvd discs? I have to agree, the player is only half baked at this stage and was probably rushed out for the xmas seasonand yes, we are the beta testers, there are some basic problems that should never had made it to retail until resolved, especially at this price point. Secondary HDMI port (hdcp 2. Oppo can't afford to fix all bugs as then they would have nothing left to use as a trojan to remove functionality the studios take a dislike to in retrospect.
They can't be too happy that people can watch UHD on 1. TVs as it reduces the uptake of 4k TVs. Arguably the 2. 03 is a stopgap until Oppo brings out a player with streaming chops to match their previous generation (or better..).
But they need more sales to entice the big players to work with them – once that happens, it may be worth the investment. But unless you're desperate or your existing Oppo fails, the argument to upgrade isn't overwhelming. Arguably the 2. 03 is a stopgap until Oppo brings out a player with streaming chops to match their previous generation (or better..).
Not all of us have interest in the streaming features, if I wanted to stream content, I wouldn't need the OPPO in the first place.
